AI for a trades business: what actually helps, what's hype.
I run field-service businesses and I build the tech, so I have no reason to oversell AI to you. The honest version: it genuinely speeds up a few specific jobs (intake, drafting, follow-up, answering after hours) and it quietly fails at the ones that need judgement, a look at the actual site, or a customer's trust. Here is which is which.
The short answer
Use AI for the repetitive, low-stakes, high-volume jobs where a wrong answer is cheap to catch: drafting a quote from structured notes, chasing an unpaid invoice, answering an after-hours enquiry so the lead does not go cold. Keep a human on anything where judgement, liability or trust is on the line. The wins are real; the hype is in pretending it replaces the operator.
AI is a very good apprentice and a very bad tradesperson. It will save you real hours on admin and first-drafts. It will not price a tricky job, read a customer, or stand behind a certificate. Automate the apprentice work, keep the tradesperson's judgement human, and you get most of the upside with none of the horror stories.
The honest guides
- AI quoting for electricians: what it genuinely speeds up in the quote, and what still needs your eyes.
- An AI booking agent for tradies: how a good one answers in your name and catches after-hours jobs, and where the call-centre version annoys customers.
- AI or hire an admin? The honest trade-off between automating and putting a person in the office.
- What AI cannot do in a trades business: the sceptical take nobody selling AI will write for you.
One thing worth checking before any of that: when a customer asks an AI tool for a tradie in your area, does it name you? Run the free AI Search Check against your trade and suburb and see where you stand in a minute.

Where I'd start
Do not buy an "AI platform". Pick the one admin job that eats the most time and is safe to get wrong occasionally, and automate just that. When it works, do the next one. That is how I build it: fixed scope, one leak at a time, from $1,500. If the leak is the phone specifically, I've built an AI receptionist into Never Miss a Call that answers the calls you can't and texts your booking link, dogfooded on my own trades lines first. If you want a read on which job to automate first, the Trades Tech Leak Audit is 30 minutes and a straight answer.
Not sure what fits your shop? Ask me, not a sales rep.
A 30-minute Tech Leak Audit and a one-page written finding inside 48 hours. Three prioritised fixes, no pitch, and the report is yours either way.
