COMPARISON · FOR PLUMBERS · NOT A RESELLER

ServiceM8 vs Fergus for a plumbing business.

Plumbers ask me this one more than any other pairing, because both products court the trade hard. I am not a partner of either. Here is where each fits a plumbing operation, and the plumbing-specific work both will hand straight back to your spreadsheet.

The short answer

ServiceM8 suits the reactive service plumber: blocked drains, burst pipes, hot water changeovers, jobs that open and close the same day, crew on iPhones. Fergus, built by a tradesman originally for his own operation, stretches further into the mixed plumbing business: service work plus renovation and small project jobs where tracking the job's financial position over weeks matters.

MY VERDICT

Pure service run on Apple gear: ServiceM8. Service plus renos, progress billing, and you want a clearer view of where each job sits financially: Fergus. Heavy compliance and property-management work: either one, plus a bolt-on, because this is where both stop.

Where ServiceM8 fits the plumbing day

  • Same-day service flow: booking to job card to on-site payment before the van leaves the kerb.
  • Photos and job notes against the job, which is half the argument-avoidance a service plumber needs.
  • Strong fit when the emergency run IS the business.

Where Fergus fits

  • Trade lineage: the workflow reads like it was designed by someone who has actually invoiced plumbing work, because it was.
  • Better shape for jobs that run longer than a day: quoting, variations and back-costing on renos and small projects.
  • A job-financials view that gives you more of the "where is this job at" picture than a pure service app.

The plumbing-specific gaps neither fills

  • The 8pm emergency enquiry. Neither product answers your phone. If the website does not take the booking, the blocked drain books whoever answers, and after hours that is whoever has online booking.
  • Recurring compliance work. Backflow testing, TMV servicing, gas compliance: recurring tests with certificates that have to be findable a year later, per site, per device. Both products will hold a job; neither wants to be your certificate register.
  • Property managers. Work orders in by email, photos and invoices back by email, status chased by phone. The agents want a document trail; you end up being the document trail.
  • Live margin on the reno. Fergus gets you closer than most, but "am I still in profit, today, mid-job" as a live dashboard is still a bolt-on conversation.

Pick the job app for the day-to-day run. The compliance register, the agent portal and the margin view are bolt-ons either way, and they are the difference between busy and profitable.

The third door: build the lean version instead

Here is the option neither reseller will mention, because they only get paid on a subscription. If you are paying per seat every month for a stack of features a plumbing shop never touches, the honest answer can be to buy neither and build the lean version instead: a system that does drains, changeovers, backflow certificates and the agent portal, and nothing else. On software I own and licence to you, with no per-seat creep and no modules to switch off.

It is not the right call for every plumber, and I will tell you when it is not. But for the right shop it is cheaper across three years than the subscription you are on, and it is the door only an operator who actually builds can put on the table. I walk through when it stacks up in build versus buy, and the category-wide version of this leak is in the State of Trades Admin 2026 data.

What I'd actually do

Choose on the shape of your work, not the feature grids. Then plug the plumbing-specific leaks around it: a booking front door for the after-hours emergency, a compliance and certificate system for the recurring tests, a portal for the property managers. Builds start from $1,500 fixed, or inside an Ops Care plan where I keep shipping the next fix every month. The Tech Leak Audit maps your setup first, free, and the plumbing version of that conversation is on the plumbers page.

  FAQ

ServiceM8 vs Fergus: what plumbers actually ask me.

Is ServiceM8 or Fergus better for a plumbing business?

If you run reactive service, blocked drains, burst pipes, hot water changeovers, jobs that open and close the same day, on a crew that lives on iPhones, ServiceM8 fits that day. If you also run renos and small projects where tracking the job financially over weeks matters, Fergus stretches further. Pick on the shape of your work, not the feature grid.

Does Fergus handle progress claims and variations on longer jobs?

Better than a pure service app, yes. Fergus was built by a tradesman for his own operation, so quoting, variations and back-costing on renos and small projects read like they were designed by someone who has actually invoiced plumbing work. That is its edge over a same-day service tool.

Can either one manage backflow, TMV or gas compliance certificates?

Both will hold a job; neither wants to be your certificate register. Recurring tests with certificates that have to be findable a year later, per site, per device, are a bolt-on either way. That register is one of the most common things I build for plumbing shops.

I do property-manager work. Does ServiceM8 or Fergus give the agent a portal?

No. Work orders in by email, photos and invoices back by email, status chased by phone: you end up being the document trail. A client-facing portal where agents see work orders, certificates and status on their own screen is a bolt-on on top of whichever job app you keep.

Can I keep ServiceM8 or Fergus and just add the missing plumbing pieces?

Almost always, and that is the sensible default. Keep the job app as the system of record and bolt on the compliance register, the agent portal and the live margin view. Ripping out working software to solve a workflow gap is the expensive way round.

Could you just build me a lean plumbing system instead of either one?

For the right shop, yes. If you are paying per seat every month for features a plumbing business never touches, I can build the lean version: drains, changeovers, backflow certificates and the agent portal, and nothing else, on software I own and licence to you. It is fit-gated, not my default pitch, but for some shops it is cheaper across three years than the subscription you are on.
