Every job app is good. Every one has the same blind spots.
ServiceM8, Tradify, Simpro, AroFlo, Fergus: I am not a partner or affiliate of any of them, and I run field-service businesses on this class of software myself. The switching debate is mostly a distraction. The money is in the gaps that every one of these tools leaves open, and what you bolt on instead of migrating.
The short answer
Pick the job app your crew will actually use, stop agonising over it, and put the energy into the four things none of them do well: the website that books jobs for you, structured quoting for complicated work, a live view of job margin while you can still change the outcome, and a client-facing portal for the property managers. That is where the Sunday admin lives, and it is the same gap regardless of which logo is on the app.
Nobody needs a fifth review of the same eight products. What you need is an operator who will tell you where your specific tool stops and whether the fix is a setting, a bolt-on, or nothing at all. Switching platforms is the most expensive way to avoid fixing the real leak.
Where every job app leaks
- The website end of the funnel. None of them fix a front door that sends the 8pm enquiry to voicemail. The job app starts once the customer has already chosen you; the leak is upstream of that.
- Complex quoting. Structured intake for jobs with fifteen variables (EV chargers, changeovers, renos) is not what these quote modules are for. The details still arrive incomplete, so the quote still gets finished at 10pm.
- Live job margin. They tell you what you invoiced. None show you, three days in, whether you are still in profit while you can still pull a lever.
- Commercial maintenance with a document trail. Recurring compliance work for property managers wants site history, certificates and a client-facing record. That usually ends up back in a spreadsheet.
The gap between a good job app and your actual workflow is where the Sunday admin lives. That gap is my whole business.
If you would rather see it than read about it, the field service app demo is a live one you can drive: move a job on the schedule, then check the crew's phone view and the invoice queue and watch both follow without anyone re-typing anything.
The honest comparisons
Written by an operator, not a reseller. Each one ends the same way: keep the tool, fix the gap.
- ServiceM8 vs Tradify: which one actually fits your shop, and where both leave you doing admin anyway.
- ServiceM8 vs AroFlo: simple residential service against heavy commercial, and how to tell which one you are.
- ServiceM8 vs Fergus for a plumbing business: the plumbing-specific work both hand straight back to your spreadsheet.
- Tradify vs Simpro: the honest sizing conversation a sales rep will not have with you.
- Tradify vs ServiceTitan: a ute and a road train on the same shortlist, and why most shops want neither.
- Simpro alternatives under 20 staff: for when you were sold the platform built for a bigger shop.
- Outgrown ServiceM8?: the third option between suffering and a six-figure migration.
- When Tradify stops scaling: the signs you've hit the ceiling, and the fork that follows.
- ServiceTitan for Aussie tradies: why most Australian shops should not sign that commitment.
- Job costing: build vs buy: with a live dashboard you can click, and an honest take on when custom beats a subscription.
- Client portal: build vs buy: click a live portal, then decide if custom beats a monthly subscription.
